Willingen Wonderland: Your Unforgettable Sauerland Escape!
Willingen Wonderland: Sauerland, Seriously? My Unforgettable (and Slightly Chaotic) Escape!
Okay, listen. I just got back from Willingen Wonderland, and let me tell you, it was… an experience. They call it an "unforgettable escape," and, look, they're not wrong. Whether that's because of the stunning scenery, the slightly wonky Wi-Fi, or the sheer volume of sausages I consumed, well, that's a story for another time. This is going to be my brutally honest take – the good, the bad, and the utterly bewildered. Consider it a travel diary meets therapy session. Buckle up.
Accessibility: The Good, The Bad, and the Stairwell of Doom
First things first: Accessibility. This is super important to me, and I was genuinely curious to see how Willingen Wonderland handled it. They did boast about facilities for disabled guests, which was a promising start. There's an elevator, which is a lifesaver, honestly. However, I’m not going to lie, navigating some of the areas felt like a treasure hunt for smooth ground. The exterior corridor to my room felt a little like an afterthought, and some of the signage…well, let’s just say I’m pretty sure I spent an extra 10 minutes lost near the shrine. They REALLY love their shrines around here.
On-site Accessible Restaurants/Lounges: I didn't have the opportunity to try, but at least, the promise was they had this. I do hope they really made sure that they really delivered on this offer.
Wheelchair Accessible: This one? Mixed bag. While the main areas sort of were, some of the paths to the swimming pool [outdoor] and, God forbid, the spa were…challenging. I overheard someone with a wheelchair having serious trouble getting to a specific part of the hotel. This is a major mark down, honestly.
Internet: Wi-Fi Warriors, Assemble! (Or, the Great Internet Drought of '23)
Okay, let’s talk about the most crucial element of a 21st-century getaway: Internet. They promised me Free Wi-Fi in all rooms! And, technically, they did deliver. Sort of. It was like a phantom limb: you knew it was there, but good luck actually feeling it.
Internet, Internet [LAN], Internet services - This was a joke. Slow and frustrating.
Wi-Fi in public areas: Better – some of the time. I spent a lot of time near the reception area, hunched over my laptop, trying to download a simple email. It was pathetic.
The saving grace? Internet [LAN] in my room, which honestly felt like a relic from the Stone Age. I may or may not have spent several hours hunched over the Ethernet cable, reminiscing about the good old days of dial-up. At least you could see a picture. Thank God for Laptop workspaces cause I had to use them.
Things to Do and Ways to Relax: Sauna Sessions and Sausage Overload
Alright, the fun stuff. Willingen Wonderland is, well, a wonderland for relaxing. They are not short on choices.
Ways to Relax – Absolutely. That’s what I came here for (and to see if all the hype was worth it).
Let's begin with the Spa. The Body scrub and Body wrap were pretty darn amazing. The Spa/sauna was a real treat. I got so relaxed I actually almost fell asleep during a facial. Note to self: don’t drink that much wine beforehand!
Fitness center and gym/fitness: I’m not a gym rat, but it looked decent enough. They actually had a Pool with view. My kind of pool.
Sauna, Steamroom: Did it and loved it all.
Massage: Pure bliss. I practically melted into the massage table. Book it. Now.
Swimming pool: I think they have a few of them, indoor, outdoor. I did them all. Best way to relax.
Foot bath: Never tried it.
Then there’s the food. Oh, the food.
Dining, drinking, and snacking: This is where Willingen truly shines. My mission? To eat as much sausage and schnitzel as humanly possible. Mission accomplished. (Sort of. I think I might have gained five pounds). Seriously, the restaurants are brilliant.
Asian cuisine in restaurant/Western cuisine in restaurant: Never tried it. I came here for the more traditional style of food.
A la carte in restaurant, Buffet in restaurant: They seem to offer both options.
Bar, Coffee shop, Poolside bar, Snack bar: Yes to them all. Even Happy hour was incredible.
Asian breakfast, Western breakfast, Breakfast [buffet], Breakfast takeaway service, Breakfast in room: The breakfast Buffet was a feast! Seriously, the options were endless: mountains of sausages, fresh bread, cheeses… I basically ate my weight in carbs every morning. I may or may not have snuck a few extra pastries for later. Don’t judge me.
Bottle of Water: They provide them. I needed them.
Coffee/tea in restaurant: Yes. I did enjoy them.
Desserts in restaurant, Salad in restaurant, Soup in restaurant: All available.
Room Service [24-hour] - Yup. They had it.

SKYHOTEL Merseburg: Your Dream German Getaway Awaits!Alright, buckle up buttercups, because we're diving headfirst into the Sauerland. Forget pristine planning, this trip to Willingen is gonna be a beautiful, chaotic mess, just the way I like it. Buckle up, it's gonna be bumpy!
The WILLINGEN Whirlwind: A Sauerland Saga (Probably Involving a Lot of Bratwurst and Overthinking)
Day 1: Arrival & "Oh God, That's a Lot of Hills"
- Morning (ish): Frankfurt Airport. Ugh, airports. Always the same: frantic people, overpriced coffee, and the inevitable moment of "Did I really pack that extra pair of socks?" After a relatively painless (thank god) flight, we're landing in Frankfurt. Collect rental car. Because taxis? Pfft. Road trip to Willingen!
- Anecdote: Last time I rented a car in Germany, I somehow confused the gas with the brake. Let's just say the parking garage attendant wasn't thrilled. Praying history doesn't repeat itself.
- Afternoon: Drive to Willingen. The drive is a dream. Rolling hills, emerald green meadows… and then… the hills hit. Seriously, Willingen is built on hills. I swear, my poor little rental car is going to be screaming by the time we arrive.
- Whining Alert: I'm not a hill person. Mountains are fine from afar. I like a gentle stroll. This? This is a workout disguised as a holiday.
- Late Afternoon/Evening: Check into the hotel "Hotel Sauerländer Hof". And let me tell you, after the drive, the sight of a proper hotel bed. Ah, it's heaven. Stroll through the town. Cute little timber-framed houses, the air is crisp, the scent of pine… I start to feel a smidge less grumpy.
- Quirky Observation: The Glockenspiel in the town square? It's like a tiny, jaunty opera that happens every hour. I can't decide if it's adorable or slightly terrifying.
- Food: Okay, first order of business: food! We're talking authentic German fare. Sauerbraten. Bratwurst. Potato salad. All washed down with a local beer. Oh man. I'm already regretting my pre-holiday diet. But hey, nobody said a holiday should be healthy.
- Late Evening: Collapse into bed. My legs ache. My stomach is full. My brain is already buzzing with plans for tomorrow.
Day 2: The Uphill Battle of the Ettelsberg and the Rollercoaster of Life (Literally)
- Morning: Breakfast at the hotel. This is where the imperfections arise. The buffet had a distinct lack of scrambled eggs. A travesty. However, the bread rolls? Perfect. Hard to forgive, but one manages.
- Emotional Reaction: I am deeply, profoundly upset by a lack of scrambled eggs.
- Mid-Morning Conquer the Ettelsberg cable car and the observation tower with the viewing platform.
- Opinion: The cable car is an absolute must-do. The views are breathtaking. If you have vertigo, just… look at the ground. Close your eyes for a bit. The views are worth it, though.
- Rambles: And the air up there is just… cleaner, crisper. You can practically feel the stress melting away. Or maybe that's just the altitude.
- Afternoon: RODELBAHN TIME! I'm talking about the summer toboggan run.
- Doubling Down on Experience: I'm going to do it again. And again. And again. The wind in my hair, the thrill of the speed, the sheer, unadulterated squealing joy… It's the kind of thing that makes you feel like a kid again. And then I'm going to go again. This time, I'll actually try not to scream so loud.
- Late Afternoon: Stroll to see the Mühlenkopf ski jump. It's massive. Like, seriously impressive. It’s summer, so no actual jumping is happening, but it's still a sight to behold. It looks pretty, even from afar.
- Messier Structure: Hang on, I feel like I'm forgetting something. Oh yes! The after-jump beers. A mandatory after-jump activity.
- Evening: Dinner at a cozy restaurant in town. More Bratwurst because… well, why not? Trying some Glühwein (hot mulled wine) for the first time. Warm and spicy and wonderful!
- Food related thoughts: The portion sizes are… generous. Let's just say, I'm going to be wearing elasticated trousers by the end of this trip.
- Late Night: Back to the hotel. My legs. Oh, my legs. But I'm also buzzing. It's been a good day.
Day 3: Water fun and farewell
- Morning: Waterpark in Willingen. Great if it rains. But! It's too nice to spend all the time inside.
- Mid-Afternoon: Exploring the local area: lake Diemelsee.
- Opinionated Language: Ok, I'm not going to lie, the water is really cold!
- Evening: One last German meal. Trying to get my fill of local food before I leave.
- Late Evening: Pack up the car. Say goodbye to the stunning view.
- Emotional Reaction: Leave the keys at the hotel, saying goodbye to a holiday… It’s always the hardest part.
Day 4: The Drive Home and the "I Need More Sauerland" Blues
- Morning: Early start. Drive back to Frankfurt.
- Minor Category: Last-minute souvenir shopping at a local bakery. I'm not leaving without some Lebkuchen (gingerbread).
- Mid-Morning: Return the rental car at the airport.
- Afternoon: Board the flight.
- Rambles: As I sit here, waiting for my flight home, I'm already planning my return. Maybe next time, I'll bring more socks. And definitely more stretchy pants.
This is it, my friends. Willingen. It's beautiful, it's exhausting, it's delicious, and it's everything a proper, messy holiday should be. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need a nap.
